This week Ben and I are joined by friend of the show Nate. Ian shows us some of his 3D sculpting and modeling skills. But first he brings us this week’s headlines.
This week’s show was recorded early due to scheduling conflicts. Ian hosts the hangout with friend of the show Nate while Ben joins in a few minutes later. Ian brings us this week’s headlines.
This week Ian and Ben are talking about file types, compressions, encoders, resolutions, and other ephemera. But first Ian brings us this week’s headlines.
Kevin runs the website Incompetech.com where anybody can listen to, download, and legally use his 2,000+ audio tracks in whatever their project is as long as they either credit him for it or pay a small fee for no credit. He shares with us his thoughts on how copyright is broken, how people such as himself are using Creative Commons in a hope to eventually surpass it, and what it’s been like dealing with content ID matching systems for sites where people use his music.
Ryan is a film maker who used Kevin’s music so often in his own productions he started to wonder, what’s the story behind somebody who shares their work online for anybody to use and edit freely? He shares production plans for their documentary, interviews they’re collecting for it, some of his experiences working with Kevin’s music, and stories about working on martial arts movies and real vampire documentaries.
We’d like to thank them both for coming to talk with us and Ryan for sticking around for some trivia after the interview. (It just wouldn’t be a NoRights Podcast without trivia, would it?) We want to encourage everyone to check out RoyaltyFreeDoc.com/Kickstarter to support the film. You can help them out for as little as $5 or as much as you’d like to give to get the corresponding rewards package. There’s something for everybody there. Finally, here’s the video version of the podcast for you to enjoy as well.
Ben tells us about the documentary Royalty Free: The Music of Kevin MacLeod which is currently crowd-funding on Kickstarter. You’ve probably heard music from incompetech.com, even if you didn’t know it. This doc takes a look at somebody who would put their music up for people to use for free.
This week Ian and Ben are joined by friends of the show Doug and Nate. Ben shares his thoughts after a recent viewing of Netflix Original Print the Legend.
Ben tells us about the first week of his new drawing exercise, Daily Doodle. (See that entire week’s drawings and thoughts on the weekly tumblr review post.) Discussing the practice of making silhouettes and then fleshing full drawings out of them, Ian drops us a link to a video.
Finally, all 4 square off in a match of general knowledge trivia. Who will emerge victorious? Tune in to find out!
This week Ben and Ian discuss the idea of finding what it is you’re passionate about in life vs toiling away at a job just to pay bills. They also talk about what makes a horror movie scary. But first, Ian brings us this week’s headlines.
Ben also tells Ian about Netflix’s 3D printing documentary, Print the Legend.
Movie Recommendations
Doug’s List
Doug’s list was made off the cuff, so we recommend you listen to the episode since there’s plenty of tangental discussion around horror TV shows and other similar programs.
This week Ben and Ian are joined by friend of the show Doug to discuss Ben’s on going search for a file sharing solution with his brother. But first Ian brings us this week’s headlines.
Ian also celebrated his 32nd birthday recently and one of his gifts was a Samsung Galaxy Tab S. Look forward to hearing him find uses for it on future episodes, and happy birthday, Ian 😀
If you want the server to be reachable from the internet (One of the key reasons we’re using this server instead of a local networking setup) then you’ll want to open a port for it. I believe the default is 8080. This can be tricky depending on your specific router setup. If you only want to flip the port open during use you might like Port Map.
Dealing with Dynamic DNS
Once your server’s running you’ll want to point users to an address to log in from. However that can be difficult if you have a dynamic DNS from your service provider that changes. There are ways of setting up a static address but the easiest solution is signing up with a site that will handle it for you. HFS has wizards for using CJB, No-IP, and DynDNS.
Finally, the boys go for a round of general trivia to see who will be the reigning champion this week. It goes into a tie-breaker round with contestants neck and neck. Who will emerge victorious this week? Tune in to find out!
